Ujjayi Breathing

Ujjayi Breathing is also known as “victorious breath” or “loud breath”.  This type of breathing technique may be used at anytime, and should be especially used, after mastered, during asana practice.  Ujjayi breathing uses the Dirgha Breath as its basis.

After the three-part breath has been mastered, and your inhalations and exhalations during this breathing technique have the same length, you may continue on with practicing Ujjayi breathing.  Be sure to begin this practice in a seated position before attempting to use Ujjayi Breathing during asana practice.

Begin in your natural relaxed state, eyes closed and shoulders released.
As you start your three-part breathing, begin to tighten your throat.
This will create an ocean like sound as you breath. AKA:  Darth Vader Breath
(Sometimes it is easier to create this sound by breathing through your mouth.  Feel free to experiment in order to achieve the proper throat intonation with mouth breathing before you attempt the Ujjayi breath through the nose.)
Ensure that the lengths of the inhalation and exhalation are the same.

Once Ujjayi breathing has been mastered, and used regularly with asana practice, continue with Nadi Shodhana - Alternate Nostril Breathing.
