Balancing your Dosha through Diet
 
Once you have identified your prominant dosha, you can than modify your diet to bring your dosha back into balance.  Here are some suggestions to balance the various dosha imbalances.
 
VATTA:
 
Increase sweet, sour and salty foods.  Decrease pungent, bitter, astringent or dry foods.
 
Hot oatmeal sweetened w/ raw honey.
Chai tea w/ milk
Sweet, heavy and or creamy fruit (bananas, avacados)
olive oil, almond oil
Hot, spiced milk (cardamom & almond)
Steamed rice, wheat & risotto
Kitchari
Legumes
Sweet potatoes
 
AVOID:  Hot, spicy foods, raw foods, dry foods (like popcorn)
 
 
PITTA:
 
Increase Sweet, Bitter & Astringent foods.  Decrease sour, salty and pungent foods.
 
Cooling foods:  pears, milk, rice pudding, coconut, mangos & almonds
Dry foods:  cereal, granola, crackers, rice cakes
Basmati rice
Vegetables:  carrots, asparagus, bitter greens, broccoli & cauliflower, brussel sprouts, green beans
 
AVOID:  nightshade vegetables (eggplant, potatoes), pickles, yogurt, sour cream, and cheese. Avoid vinegar in salad dressing; use lemon juice instead. Alcoholic and fermented foods should be avoided.
 
KAPHA:
 
Increase pungent;, bitter & astringent.  Decrease sweetk, sour & salty.
 
Vegetable soup
Lentils
Apples
Chick Peas
Dry cereal, rice cakes, crackers
 
Vegetables:  carrots, asparagus, bitter greens, broccoli & cauliflower, brussel sprouts, green beans
 
 
AVOID:  oily, heavy sweet foods, fried foods, Sweet, juicy vegetables are aggravating. Cooked Oats, Brown or White Rice, and Wheat are imbalancing.
